5 Types of Yoga in Dubai

Roll out the yoga mat, loosen your body and align your mind. Whether you opt to ‘namaste’ and practice sky-high yoga on the 360-degree observation deck of The View, be at one with more than 3,000 species of plants and animals at The Green Planet, or disconnect with the world and journey into the Arabian desert with like-minded yogis on a one night retreat Dubai is the perfect place to find peace and stretch it out.

With a plethora of brilliant outdoor spaces and yoga studios dotted all over the city, here are five different kinds of yoga, and a suggestion of where to try them in Dubai.

Hatha Yoga

The term “Hatha” in Sanskrit refers to any yoga that teaches physical postures. It literally translates to “force”. Hatha yoga teaches the basics, with slower movements that require you to hold each post for a few breaths. It is considered to be a gentler form of yoga and ideal for beginners as it allows them to ease into the movements.

Vinyasa Yoga

For a more dynamic approach, try vinyasa yoga, which links movement and breath together. This yoga practice is more fast-paced and is good for runners and endurance athletes because it allows for continuous movement. The word “vinyasa” can be translated as “arranging something in a special way.”

Ashtanga Yoga

For those who are looking to dive straight into the deep end, ashtanga yoga is ideal. The series of six sequenced poses requires you to flow and breathe through each pose to develop internal heat. In each of the classes these poses must be carried out in the exact same order. You can either build your own sequence or follow instructors that have developed a series of specific order of movements – simply choose which works best for you.

Hot Yoga

Similar to the very popular Bikram yoga, hot yoga is practised in a heated, humid room. Hot yoga does not follow the same 26-pose sequence as Bikram Yoga, and the heated room allows the body to move more freely and lets you sink deeper into some poses. It is also an excellent way to rid the body of any toxins through the sweat-glands. Make sure to stay hydrated, as hot yoga turns the heat all the way up!

Restorative Yoga

Designed to help your body feel a deeper sense of relaxation as you move through the poses, restorative yoga poses are mellow, and slow-moving with longer holds that allow your body’s parasympathetic nervous system to be targeted. This form of yoga is carried out using various props such as blankets, bolsters, and yoga blocks to fully support your body through each move. This yoga is perfect for those who find it hard to slow down, those who experience insomnia and even suffer from anxiety and perfect for athletes on their recovery days.
